Doctor among three booked in incubator tragedy

Patiala, Feb 20 (PTI) Two years after the death of sixinfants in incubator fire at a government hospital here, anFIR has been lodged against a doctor, a nurse and an attendantin connection with the tragedy.

Dr K K Lochan, Head of the Paediatrics Department ofRajindra Hospital, staff nurse Reeta and attendant Satya Devihave been booked under Section 304 A (causing death bynegligence) of the IPC, police said.

A fire had occurred in the incubators at the hospital inJanuary, 2009 in which six newborns had charred to death.

Registration of the case against the trio comes severalmonths after the submission of an inquiry report by a SP levelofficer.

While initially the government had ordered a judicialprobe into the episode after the Medical Education Ministerhad resigned over the issue, the Home Department later ordereda criminal probe by the Police Department.

The minister concerned, Tikshan Sud had later withdrawnhis resignation.

The criminal inquiry into the whole incident thatresulted in the death of six infants on January 31, 2009,Inquiry conducted by a SP rank officer had submitted thefindings to Patiala SSP Gurpreet Singh Gill almost a couple ofmonths back.

Earlier, the government had already received a reportsubmitted by former Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge KCGupta, who was appointed as a one-man inquiry committee by thePunjab CM.

In his report, K C Gupta had recommended chargesheetagainst four government employees, including two doctors andone grade four employee that included Government MedicalCollege and Rajindra Hospital Principal Jaswinder Pal KaurShergill and Dr Lochan.
