Duminy wants to make a mark at point position

By Pti

New Delhi, Feb 20 (PTI) He can win win games for SouthAfrica with his batting abilities but young batsman J P Duminyis also keen to contribute to his side''s cause in the WorldCup by putting up a good effort at crucial fielding positionof point and cover region.

Duminy said he has worked hard to be effective in thecover and point region, where aruguably game''s best everfielder and his compatriot Jonty Roodes use to field.

After Rhodes, Herschelle Gibbs gurded that position welland untill recently AB de Villiers did the job for SouthAfrica. Since de Villiers will keep wickets, Dumniy will beposted in the crucial position and the youngster is lookingforward to fit into shoes of his succesful compatriots.

"It''s a very important position, especially in thesub-continent, where batsmen ply their shots in thisdirection. It is a slight adjustment to do this fielding, butso far it''s been going well and hopefully it will stay sothroughout the tournament," Duminy said.

"I''m ready to fill those shoes and they are very largeshoes if you look at who has done the field work for theProteas. Since AB took over as wicketkeeper, I have workedincredibly hard on my fielding, and I believe I have faredwell so far and made the position my own," Duminy toldAfrikaans weekly Rapport.

Rhodes had first caught the attention with his electricfielding in 1992 when he got Pakistan''s Inzamam-ul-Haq outwith a stunning diving effort.

Meanwhile, Proteas batting consultant Duncan Fletchersaid Hashim Amla is the key to their Word Cup campaign.

Fletcher said Amla would have to fire on all cylinderswhen the Proteas meet West Indies on Thursday in their firstgame of the tournament.

"There is no doubt that (Amla) is a batsman of worldclass. First everyone believed his technique was only suitedto Test cricket but he has proved everyone wrong - that''s whyhe deserves cricket.

"(Amla) worked hard on his game and is now a brilliantinstant cricket player."

Fletcher said every team, competing in the World Cupwould want to have Amla on their side.

"There is no team in the world who would not selectHashim first. Besides his prowess with the bat, he is calmnesspersonified - something that is critical in the tournament."

Fletcher said what separates Amla from the rest was hisability to make the most of the Power Plays, when strictfielding restrictions are in place.

"He is outstanding in this time and extremely difficultto bowl to, especially because he uses his wrists so well."PTI FH AT
