Bookie arrested for accepting bets on India-Bangladesh WC tie
Mumbai, Feb 20 (PTI) An alleged cricket bookie has beenarrested from suburban Borivali for allegedly acceptingbettings on the India-Bangladesh match of the ICC World Cup,police said today.
Acting on a tip off, a trap was laid and diamond brokerPiyush Seth (42) was nabbed from a room in Country Parkbuilding last night while accepting bets for the first matchof the World Cup, said Senior Inspector (Crime branch XII)Milind Khetle.
An LCD television, six mobile phones, a modem and alaptop were recovered the bookie, he said.
Seth has been booked under relevant sections of GamblingAct and the Indian Telegraph Act, he said. "Seth is beingquestioned. We are trying to know with whom he was in contact,for whom he is accepting bettings," Khetle said.
Most of the bookies have gone underground or areoperating from outside the city fearing arrest, a seniorpolice officer said.
This is the first arrest after the city Crime Branchintensified its surveillance to nab the bookies in the view ofCricket World Cup.
