Ranchi, Feb 18 (PTI) Services brightened their semifinalchances by edging past Tamil Nadu 2-1 in the men''s hockeyevent of the National Games at the Astroturf ground heretoday.

Services captain Ignace Tirkey put his team ahead througha scorcher before Tamil Nadu''s V Ramdass evened the score-linewith an equally fierce strike.

But Dhananjaya Mahadhik field goal in the dying minutesand some brilliant defence in the final three minutes helpedServices seal the win.

Services had earlier defeated Chandigarh 3-2 in theirpool A match.

Orissa, which had lost to Maharashtra 1-2 in the men''sgroup ''B'' match, once again put up a poor show today, losing1-3 to Delhi and are virtually out of semifinal race.

Danish Mujtaba scored twice and Damandeep Singh struckonce for Delhi while Jagwant Singh reduced the margin forOrissa.

Punjab men have already won their pool B matches earlier,beating Delhi 4-3 and Maharashtra 3-2 to keep their hopes fora last four berth.

After the rest day tomorrow, group matches will resume onFebruary 20 and 21.

The semifinals and the final are scheduled for February23 and 25 respectively.
