Hush..somebody's listening to your phone calls!
The Committee has suggested that phone calls of all individuals be invariably tapped. The proposal stated that the tapping could be done directly by the centre without the involvement of the telecom operators and said, “As the proposal is related to national security, public accountability is not relevant."

In what could be an invasion of privacy of citizens, the proposal has suggested that calls be intercepted by a centralised monitoring system that will have access to all the private players operating in the market. The only catch being that the state governments will have to agree to the centralised phone tapping.
The centre has justified the move by saying that it could put a curb on the illegal tapping by private operators and will legalise the whole system under the ambit of the centre. The 540 crore project will be supervised by the Cabinet Secretary, the Home Secretary and the Intelligence Bureau Chief.
This comes in the aftermath of many phone calls being tapped following both legal and illegal requests from the government and individuals. Many scams have seen the light of the day, like the airing of the Niira Radia tapes in the public space that blew the lid off the biggest 2G scam dogging India at the moment.
