Telangana issue could generate heat in Parliament

New Delhi, Feb 18 (PTI) The issue of a separate Telanganacould generate heat in the Budget session of Parliamentbeginning Monday as the government has no plans to table abill to carve out a new state.

"A bill on Telangana is not included in the list of billsto be introduced in the budget session," Parliamentary AffairsMinister Pawan Kumar Bansal told reporters.

He, however, hastened to add that the list of bills wasalways "tentative" and Home Ministry could come up with aproposal.

During his recent interaction with editors of televisionchannels, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was ambivalent onthe issue.

He had said the government was trying to arrive at aconsensus on the "complicated" statehood issue throughconsultations with political parties, which should be allowedto be pursued to its "logical conclusion".

Andhra Pradesh Legislature had descended into chaosyesterday when TRS and TDP MLAs hailing from Telangana regionvirtually manhandled Governor E S L Narasimhan. The bedlamalso saw the mike and the lectern being uprooted and chairs onthe podium pulled down.

Reports from Hyderabad had it that Congress Legislatorsand MPs from Telangana have decided to put pressure on theUnion government to make a statement reiterating itscommitment to implement its December 9, 2009 announcementregarding statehood to the region.
