Rouvanjit case: Hearing for trial of four teachers on March 5
Kolkata, Feb 17 (PTI) The hearing for trial of fourteachers of La Martiniere School for Boys, accused in thesuicide case of Rouvanjit Rawla, would begin on March 5.
Fast Track Third Court judge Rabindranath Malik, to whomthe case was transferred for hearing by the Chief Judge ofCity Sessions Court Dipak Saha Roy, today directed that thematter would be taken up for hearing on March 5.
A magistrate had on November 19 ordered the fourteachers, including school principal Sunirmal Chakraborti, betried under section 305 (abetment to suicide of a child),section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt) and section 34 (commonintention) of IPC.
Section 305, if proved, can invite death sentence.
Rouvanjit had been found hanging at his residence onFebruary 12, last year, four days after being allegedly canedby the principal for misbehaviour and disobedience.
Chakravarti and the three teachers-- Garnian, ParthoDutta and David Raun-- had been arrested on October 4, 2010for the suicide of the Class VII student, but were given bailon the same day by the chief metropolitan magistrate as allthe sections of IPC they were charged with were bailable.
The case had been filed by Rouvanjit father Ajay Rawlaunder section 305 (abetment to suicide of a minor) of IPC, butthe police had filed lesser charges under sections 323 and 324(punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (punishmentwithout grave provocation) and 23 of the Juvenile Justice(negligence of duty).
Rawla had filed a police complaint at the ShakespeareSarani police station here four months after the incident. PTIAMR MD
