New Delhi, Feb 17 (PTI) Former Commonwealth GamesOrganising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi''s close aideShekhar M Deorukhkar was remanded to CBI custody for two moredays for interrogation of his alleged role in the multi-crorerupees overlays scam linked to the last year''s sporting event.
"Considering the nature of the case and the allegationslevelled against the accused, I am satisfied that furtherpolice custodial interrogation is required to unearth theentire conspiracy. Accused is remanded in CBI custody tillFebruary 19," Special CBI Judge O P Saini said.
Seeking extension of Deorukhkar''s custody, CBI told thecourt that the probe in the case was not yet complete and theaccused was not answering properly during the interrogation.
"The accused is evasive in his replies and is notcooperating with the investigating agency and his furthersustained custodial interrogation is required," senior PublicProsecutor V K Sharma and Akhilesh, appearing for CBI, said.
The agency said the accused needs to be confrontedwith other suspects and documents related to the case.
"There are sufficient evidence on record which confirmthat the accused had accepted a huge bribe amount fromoverlays suppliers for himself and other officials of theOrganising Committee (CWG) in return for award of contracts atexorbitant rates and release of payments to suppliers," CBIsaid in its remand application.
The probe agency also said CWG OC Director General V KVerma and other officials entered into a criminal conspiracywith Managing Director Binu Nanu of private firms MeroformIndia Pvt Ltd and G L Events Pvt Ltd, arrested for his role inthe CWG scam, and others to cause undue favours to variousother companies.
The other companies that CBI named in its remandapplication included M/S PICO Deepali Overlays Consortium, M/SNussli (Switzerland) Ltd and M/S ESAJV D Art Indo Consortium.
CBI said these firms were given undue favours during awardof contracts for the mega sporting event held last year.
"The accused public servants, by abusing theirofficial positions thereby cheated and caused undue loss tothe government of India and corresponding gain to the saidfour companies and themselves," CBI said.
During the hearing, Deorukhkar alleged he was physicallyassaulted by CBI officials during his custodial interrogation.
