Book on maritime history of Konkan released
Mumbai, Feb 18 (PTI) The Maritime History Society (MHS)under the Western Naval Command has brought out the 13thpublication in its series of books on maritime issues.
Vice Admiral Sanjeev Bhasin, Flag Officer Commanding inChief, Western Naval Command, released the book on ''MaritimeHeritage of Konkan'' in Mumbai yesterday.
The book, authored by Sachin Pendse, Associate Professor,Tolani College of Commerce, Mumbai and a member of the IndianNational Cartographic Association as also the Maritime HistorySociety, looks into the rich maritime heritage of Konkan alongwith the physical factors that influenced its maritimecharacter.
It highlights the ports along the Konkan Coast, theirrise and fall and emergence of new ports over time. Themaritime legacy of Konkan acquired a new dimension with therise of Maratha power under Chhatrapati Shivaji who laid thefoundation of an indigenous navy.
The book also dwells into the aspects of traditional boatbuilding techniques, types of boats, navigational wisdom andthe achievements of the Maratha Navy. The text is supported bya large number of maps, illustrations and photographs.
Cdr (Retd) Mohan Narayan, Curator MHS welcomed thegathering while Admiral (Retd) J G Nadkarni, Chief Patron ofMHS, along with Prof B Arunachalam, Academic Advisor (MHS)gave an introduction to the book before it was released by AdmSanjeev Bhasin.
