Congress to fight Assam assembly polls on devlt plank

Silchar, Feb 17 (PTI) Development will be the mainplank on which the Congress will contest the forthcomingassembly elections in Assam, AICC General Secretary and Assamin-charge Digvijay Singh said.

"The state has witnessed tremendous developmentduring the last decade of the Congress rule in the state andpeople are very happy with the Congress", Singh, who iscurrently on a visit to the Barak Valley told reporters heretoday.

The Congress government, he said, has done very goodjob during the last few years like initiating dialogue withthe ULFA, initiating various schemes for the poor and themarginalised, bringing about remarkable improvement in law andorder situation and health services among other things.

The Congress begun its election campaign in theBarak Valley by organising a huge public rally here yesterday.

Altogether 1200 party workers have applied for partynomination for the 126 assembly seats which he said was"remarkable. ...This proves that the people of the state arestill with the Congress".

Assam Pradesh Congress President Bhubaneswar Kalitasaid that the BJP was a communal party and the people of Assamhad rejected both the AGP and BJP.
