Protest over abduction of Indian fishermen

Chennai, Feb 16 (PTI) Senior DMK leaders, including party''sRajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, were arrested today after they triedto take out a rally protesting the alleged abduction of over100 Indian fishermen by Sri Lankan fishermen.

According to police, others detained were Lok Sabha MP TKSElangovan and party''s senior functionaries besides scores ofDMK workers.

The DMK activists tried to take out a rally to the SriLankan Deputy High Commission here in connection with theyesterday''s incident.

Earlier, Kanimozhi slammed the Sri Lankan government forthe incident and demanded immediate release of the fishermen.

As many 106 fishermen belonging to three fishing hamlets ofNagapattinam district were allegedly abducted by a group ofSri Lankan fishermen while fishing off Kodiakarai coast andtook them to Vadamarachi in Jaffna district of Sri Lanka.

The Indian fishermen were later handed over to the Lankanauthorities.
