Former Orissa cricketer sent to jail for wife-beating

Bhubaneswar, Feb 15 (PTI) Orissa''s former Ranji captainPravanjan Mallick, who was yesterday arrested by police forallegedly beating his wife was today forwarded to judicialcustody after his bail petition was rejected by a local court.

Mallick was arrested after a case was registered againsthim under section 498(A) (torture), 323 (assault) and 307(attempt to murder) based on the complaint lodged by his wifeSini Mohanty.

"Mallick was arrested after police found prima facieevidence on the complaint made by his wife Sini Mohanty," DCPH K Lal said adding that medical examination on the wife''sinjuries confirmed that they were fresh.

Pravanjan and she were staying separately for over ayear and a case of divorce was under the consideration of thecourt, Sini Mohanty said.

"He asked me to meet on the pretext of Valentine Day.

After I entered into his car, Pravanjan beat me. He wascompletely under influence of alcohol," she told reporters.

Sini also alleged that her husband used to beat herearlier.

However, Mallick and his family members refused togive any statement on the matter.
