Puducherry Assembly adjourned sine die

Puducherry, Feb 15 (PTI) Puducherry Assembly whichresumed its sitting for a day after a 10 days, adjourned sinedie today.

The House had its brief interim budget session fromFebruary 2 to 4 and the vote on account earmarking funds forthe six months from April was passed.

Speaker R Radhakrishnan had on February 4 promised themembers that a days session would be held subsequently toenable them to bring in private members business and forthanksgiving ceremony.

Home and Health Minister E Valsaraj assured that thegovernment was waiting for the report of the three member FactFinding Committee that was now probing the incident of leakageof chlorine gas from Chemfab Alkalis factory at Kalapet onJanuary 26 resulting in complaints of nausea, respiratoryproblem and other health related problems among the residents.

He said as soon as information that scores of residents ofthe villages in the neighbourhood of the factory had developedhealth problems following the leak of chlorine gas from thefactory he and PWD Minister M O H F Shahjahan visited thespot.

He said that as an immediate step the government orderedtemporary closure of the factory as per provisions ofthe Environment Protection Act and simultaneously instituted aprobe by three member committee comprising officials of thePollution Control Committee and the Puducherry Engineeringcollege to go into full details of the incident.

"We are waiting for the report and no steps would be sparedto act upon the findings of the committee as soon as thereport is available he said.

Action would be taken in keeping with the committeesreport, he said. PTI Cor
