London, Feb 15 (ANI): A Wales Audit Office chief operating officer ordered a 464 pounds chauffeur-driven Mercedes to attend a meeting with top auditors from around Britain to check on how taxpayer's money is spent.
Anthony Snow ordered the Mercedes, paid for by taxpayers, for the 290-mile journey to attend the conference, which was supposed to teach those attending how to save public money.
The auditor, who got in the vehicle in Asaph, North Wales, to travel to the auditor's public spending meeting in Poole, Dorset, even signed off his own expense claim for the limousine.
The conference was called "More For Less - Meeting The Challenges Of A Changed Environment" for top Government auditors from across Britain.
Snow was the 107,000pounds-a-year top official at the watchdog responsible for making sure the Cardiff-based Welsh Assembly spends taxpayers' money wisely.
"It is staggering that Wales' public spending watchdog authorised 464 pounds for a chauffeur-driven Mercedes," the Daily Mail quoted Assembly member Leanne Wood as saying.
"I've been told that this trip was arranged at short notice to attend the National Audit Office's senior management conference. It was called 'More For Less - Meeting The Challenges Of A Changed Environment' which is ironic.
"I find it difficult to understand why his appearance at the conference should need to have been at short notice, and even if it was, he could have got there for a lot less," she stated.
Snow has since left his job - and officials said there is little they can do to get the money back. (ANI)
