Shillong, Feb 14 (PTI) Mediapersons in Shillong todayboycotted Rahul Gandhi�s interaction session with students ofthe North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) here after they weresubjected to intense security check and literally confined ina room for over an hour.
Over 25 mediapersons, despite being issued specialpasses to cover the programme, were confined in a roomadjacent to the convention hall where the interaction wasorganised, minutes before Rahul arrived, and were not allowedeither inside the hall or to go outside till the middle of theinteraction.
"We are doing our job", an SPG personnel said, whenquestioned about the ''security measure''.
The media then decided to boycott the programme evenas the organisers were seen persuading saying they can beallowed inside the hall for maximum three minutes.
Interestingly amidst allegations that the interactionwas political and meant to lure youths for joining the NSUI,the office of NEHU Vice-Chancellor said "we are not aware whatthe meeting is all about. The Congress will be in know ofthings".
After the hour-long interaction was over, activists ofthe Congress�s student�s wing were seen distributing NSUImembership forms among the students who had attended theprogramme.
The coordinator for Gandhi�s visit D Geetha Krishnantold reporters, "the programme has nothing to do withCongress. It�s just an informal interaction. Rahul tookquestions from the students on various issues".
At the Convention Hall of NEHU, the AICC GeneralSecretary interacted with some 600 students of the city. Fortystudents, each from 15 colleges in Shillong, besides 70 othersfrom NEHU attended the programme.
After the programme, Gandhi flew to Mizoram where hewas slated to inaugurate a girls'' hostel.
