Rooney's moment of brilliance came in the 78th minute of the game when he sprung into the air and twisted to connect a deflected cross looped shot from Nani. The impact was so well-timed that the ball flew off his out-stretched right limb and sailed into Manchester City goal post.
Sir Alex Ferguson, was so excited of the Rooney master-class that he appeared short of words to describe it. He said, "It was stunning," and added, "We've had some fantastic goals here - Rooney hit a volley against Newcastle some years ago - but in terms of execution you'll never see that. Nani's opener was an unbelievable goal, but nobody in their right sense will even talk about it. All the talk will be about that winning goal. Unbelievable."
Nani opened the account for Manchester United in the 41st minute of the game. City leveled in the 65th minute with Silva scoring their lone goal of the match.
This was the England striker's fifth goal in an otherwise disappointing season. Manchester United now have 57 points from 26 games with Arsenal on 53 from 26.
