New Delhi, Feb 12 (PTI) Around 6,000 athletes, includingsome top Indian runners, will participate in the MawanaMarathon to be held here on February 20.
Top names like Preeti Rao in women''s section and DeepChand in men''s category will vie for honours in the Rs 15 lakhprize-purse event.
The marathon in its 22nd edition will be flagged off byworld champion wrestler Sushil Kumar and Commonwealth Gamesgold medallist discus thrower Krishna Poonia from India Gate.
The event will also witness the participation of formernational champion Sathyabhama, former Asian track and fieldwinner Asha Agarwal and Sunita Godara in the women''s veterancategory.
Talking to the reporters on the sidelines of a functionhere today Agarwal while emphasising the lack of improvementin the timings of the runners said, "Nowadays people getattracted towards the prize money associated with the marathonand end-up running more frequently which is the reason wedon''t see an improvement in the timings of the participantsalthough there is an improvement in the medal haul."
Chairman of Mawana industries, Siddharth Shriramreiterated that marathon will grow in future. "You will seemore and more marathon runs being organised in the future.
People today are more concerned about their health andmarathon is one way to keep yourself fit," Shriram insisted.
He further said that his organisation will continue topromote sports in the country barring cricket and said, "Wewould look forward to sponsor the track and field events infuture besides supporting the amateur golf tournament forwomen." PTI SNK PDS
