Jharkhand boxer injured in accident

Jamshedpur, Feb 13 (PTI) Four officials and a player ofthe Jharkhand Boxing Association were injured in a roadaccident while returning from the opening ceremony of the 34thNational Games in Ranchi.

The injured included JBA Chief coach Ernest Lakra, who isthe father of international boxer A L Lakra, Coach G S Murtyboxer Vikas Mallick and one another person.

While Lakra received injuries in the chest, Murtysustained was hurt on the chin, JBA sources said, adding thatMallick fell unconscious after receiving a head injury.

Mallick was admitted in the Tata Main Hospital forobservation today. The rest were discharged after first aid.

The incident occurred when the boxing team and playerswere returning home in a mini-bus after taking part in theopening ceremony last night.

The driver of the mini-bus lost control over and hitanother vehicle at the Tamaria Ghati on Ranchi-JamshedpurNational Highway last mid-night.

The injured were given medical aid after they reachedJamshedpur.

When contacted, Dr. Dinesh Upadhyay, Secretary of JBA,said Jharkhand will win at least six gold medals (three eachin men''s and women''s category) in the boxing championship atthe JRD Tata sports complex, Jamshedpur, which is one of thevenues of the Games.

The boxing competition will take place from February 18to 24 with 219 pugilists representing 32 teams each in themen''s and women''s group vying for the top honour during aweek-long competition.
