Supreme Court seeks Centre's response on Afzal Guru's plea for transfer to J and K jail

New Delhi, Feb 11 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Friday sought the response of the Central Government on a plea filed by Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru for transfer to a prison in Jammu and Kashmir from Tihar jail.

Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist Afzal Guru has in his petition pleaded to the apex court for a direction to the Delhi Government to shift him to a jail in his native state on the ground of convenience to his family members.

In his petition, Guru sought his shifting out from Tihar Jail saying his stay in a jail in his native state would be more convenient for his family members, who cannot come all the way to Delhi every now and then to meet him.

Afzal was awarded the death sentence by a Delhi court on December 18, 2002 after being convicted of conspiracy to attack Parliament on December 13, 2001, waging war against the country and committing murder.

Delhi High Court upheld the death sentence on October 29, 2003 and the Supreme Court rejected his appeal two years later on August 4, 2005.

The 2001 Parliament attack, led to the death of a dozen people; five terrorists, six policemen and a civilian. (ANI)
