Indian footballer fails dope test

By Biswajeet Panda
Mumbai, Feb 11: Nishant Mehra, the Mumbai Football Club midfielder, on Feb 10, has been provisionally suspended by the national soccer league for failing a dope test.

In the dope test, he was found positive for tetrahydrocannabinol, an active substance in cannabis, reported Reuters.

In a statement to Reuters, Sunando Dhar, the chief executive officer of the I-League, has reportedly said, "The footballer appeared today with his manager and was taken to the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) where his 'B' sample was opened for testing," and added, "We have provisionally suspended him till the results arrive."

Mehra is the first one to fail doping tests in the I-League, India's national football league, since in-competition checks began in Jan 2011 and if his 'B' sample tests positive as well, then he could face a ban for two years.
