Ahmedabad, Feb 11 (PTI) Appreciating the steps takenby the government to check illegal mining in the state,Gujarat High Court today disposed of the PIL filed by RTIactivist Amit Jethva, who was shot dead last year.
The division bench of Chief justice S J Mukhopadhaya andJustice Akil Kureshi appreciated the decision to form specialtask forces and grievance redressal committees to curbillegal mining.
Court accepted the government''s contention that themechanism to check illegal mining activities is in place andaction is being taken against those violating the norms.
Jethva''s PIL specifically drew attention to illegal miningin the Gir forest region. A few days after he filed it, onJuly 20, 2010, he was shot dead opposite the High Courtbuilding.
During the last hearing, the state government had filedan affidavit stating it had formed special task forces andgrievance redressal committees at state and district levels.
The government had further said that it would holdpolice officers, revenue officers and officers of Geology andMining department of the concerned area accountable forillegal mining activities. .
