New Delhi, Feb 10: Ruling BJP in MCD today rebutted allegations by opposition Congress that it has diverted funds meant for education for buying furniture and laptops for other departments, saying no fiscal mismanagement has been found.

Senior Congress councillor and former Mayor Farhad Suri had claimed at a meeting of MCD this week that several crores of rupees meant for education have been diverted.

Leader of MCD House Subhash Arya said a report received from the Engineering Department showed that there was no misuse of funds. Suri had given a list of eight cases of alleged mismanagement of funds, including an expense of Rs 14 lakh towards building staff quarters and paying salaries.

"We had asked for a detailed report from the Engineering Department, which showed that the charges made by the opposition are baseless," the BJP leader said.

As per the report given by the Engineer-in-Chief, there is no information on purchasing refrigerators, laptops, multimedia projectors from education funds in Narela and Central zones. No money has been spent on hiring vehicles and on staff quarters in Central and South zones, the report said.

However, the report said, there is provision of diversion of one per cent of construction cost of projects. It said expenditure amounting to Rs 2.75 lakh has been made towards hiring vehicles by the project division of Shahdara North and South Zones and Rs 5.5 lakh has been spent by the project division of Central zone.

"Rs 43.5 crore was given to the Engineering Department, out of which Rs 38.5 crore was spent on building toilet blocks, boundary walls, installing fire safety equipments. Rs five crore has been spent on electricity. Rs 6.5 crore was given to all the school principals for carrying out developmental works. Rs 100 crore is available with the Education Department as fund for various ongoing projects," said the report.

It also denied money was diverted for construction of staff quarters in Seelampur.
