Srinagar, Feb 9 (ANI): Wholesalers and retailers of pulses have said that the demand for it is higher in winters than in summers, while vegetables purchases take a back seat.

During heavy snowfall, major link roads get blocked and the availability of vegetables fluctuate.

M. Shafi Wani , a seller, said people prefer pulses over vegetables

"The advantages of eating pulses during winters are that it keeps your body fit." Wani said.

"There are only two to four varieties of pulses during summers, but in winters there are about 20-25 varieties of pulses. So that is why they prefer pulses during winters" he added.

People stock up on food for months in advance to counter the winter, when the valley is completely cut off from rest of the region.

Anwar Ahmad, a customer said, "Due to heavy snowfall, people use more pulses and keep about two to four kilograms at home during the winter."

"There are a number of advantages if one eats them, it is very good for health. During winter lungs are blocked because of the cold. Pulses help to remove the blockages."(ANI)
