Census 2011 gets commemorative postal stamp

Mumbai, Feb 9: President of India, Pratibha Devisingh Patil, has released a special commemorative postal stamp on Census 2011, which begins on Wednesday, Feb 9.

P Chidambaram, Union Home Minister, Shri Gurudas Kamat, Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Shri GK Pillai, Union Home Secretary, C Chandramouli, Census Commissioner, India and other dignitaries were also present in the occasion.

Along with the Census 2011, enumerators will prepare a National Population Register (NPR). The second phase called the Population Enumeration will be conducted simultaneously all over the country from the 9th to 28th of Feb 2011.

The Indian Census has been the most credible source of information on demography, economic activity, literacy and education, housing and household amenities, urbanization, fertility and mortality, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, language, religion, migration, disability and many other socio-cultural and demographic data since 1872.

The Census 2011 will cover 640 districts, 5767 tensile, 7742 towns and more than 6 lakhs villages spread across 35 states and union territories. The Census 2011 will witness 2.7 million enumerators and supervisors.
