Indian Ocean pirates seize oil tanker

Rome, Feb 8: An Italian oil tanker has been hijacked by pirates in the Indian Ocean. Italian Navy informed that vessel named Savina Caylyn was attacked at some 500 miles (800km) off the Indian coast and 800 miles (1,300km) from Somalia.

According to reports published by the Reuters, the ship heading for Pasir Gudang port in Malaysia was carrying a load of crude oil. Italian media reports say that that a navy frigate was on its way to secure the release of the tanker and the crew but may take several days to reach.

In recent years there has been a spurt in the cases of Somalian pirates making millions of dollars by capturing cargo vessels in the shipping lanes around the Horn of Africa.

According to reports, from the EU naval force the tanker was sailing westward towards the Somali coast.
