Goa to send a delegation to Karnataka over vegetables issue
Panaji, Feb 8 (PTI) Goa government will send a high-leveldelegation to Karnataka tomorrow to sort out the situationfollowing stoppage of supply of vegetables by the wholesalersin that state.
Goa Horticulture Development Corporation''s ChairmanSankulp Amonkar claimed that around 130 tones of vegetablesworth Rs 35 lakh, which were on the way to Goa, were destroyedby a mob of around 300 wholesalers today at Belgaum.
Amonkar said that chief minister Digambar Kamat has askeda high level delegation headed by state agriculture secretaryto visit Belgaum and sort out the crisis.
"Chief Minister today spoke to superintendent of police incharge of Belgaum region, asking him to give protection to thetrucks carrying vegetables for the corporation," the Chairmantold reporters.
GHDC gets around 130 tones of vegetables from Belgaumwhich is supplied to consumers here at affordable ratesthrough its 350-odd outlets.
"Since Belgaum-based wholesalers had refused to provide usvegetables, we had brought them from places likeChikmangalore, Nashik and Kolhapur which are repacked in ayard at Belgaum and brought to Goa," he said.
He claimed that a lobby of vegetable vendors inthe state is hell-bent to sabotage corporation�s scheme ofproviding vegetables at subsidised rates.
