Ganguly rules out retirement from competitive cricket

Kolkata, Feb 8 (PTI) Former Indian captain Sourav Gangulytoday ruled out retiring from competitive cricket and said hewas still hoping to play in the Indian Premier League if anopportunity came his way in the future.

A day after speculation about his retirement from allforms of cricket did the rounds, he said it was a classic caseof misunderstanding and he was "shocked and disappointed" tosee how his comments were misinterpreted by the media.

"After learning that something was misunderstood duringthe interview, I had sent a rejoinder and said if I don''t getto play IPL, I will not be participating in any forms ofdomestic cricket. But if I do get an opportunity to play IPL,I will play domestic cricket to stay fit," Ganguly told PTI inan interview here.

Reiterating that he has not called it quits from domesticcricket, Ganguly said the media blew his remarks out ofproportion and in no point of time during the interview he hasmentioned about his complete retirement from the game.

"It was completely misunderstood. It was in a sequence ofquestions I had said that I would not play domestic cricket ifI don''t play in IPL. It was said in a different perspectivecompletely," the former Indian captain said.

"I had never said in the interview that I was retiringfrom all forms of cricket and there was no question ofbacktracking. I don''t understand how they (media) came to sucha conclusion," he said.

An interview to a television channel yesterday triggeredspeculation about Ganguly''s retirement from all forms of thegame as his comments were misinterpreted by the media.

"It''s very disappointing and shocking to know the way themedia interpreted it and blew it out of proportion. Itshould not have happened like this," Ganguly said.

"It was a classic example of I say something in somecontext which was understood completely in a different way insome other context," he said.

Asked how he sees his cricketing career panning out afterall the franchises chose to ignore him for IPL IV, Gangulysaid, "You have to wait and see.

"I will take a call if an opportunity comes my way infuture. I have already retired from International cricket(after Australia series) in 2008. And it''s too far to talkabout the next IPL." PTI TAP SSC MRM
