HM declares open housing complex for tsunami hit villages
Puducherry, Feb 6 (PTI): Union Home Minister P Chidambaramtoday declared open a housing complex of more than 1,400independent houses constructed by Puducherry government forrehabilitation of tsunami-affected fishermen families offour coastal villages at Kalapet near here.
The complex, built with the help of a Rs 82 crore Centralgovernment grant, will house fisherfolk of Pillaichavady,Sinna Kalapet, Periya Kalapet and Ganapathy Chettykulamvillages, who were affected in the December 2004 tsunami.
Chidambaram also lauded Puducherry for emerging on top inthe education sector in a recent nationwide survey, whichbrought to the fore "the excellent opportunities available inall levels of education in Puducherry".
Puducherry, he said, was the only city that provides freemedical education to all school students.
Chief Minister V Vaithilingam, V Narayanasamy, UnionMinister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and the chiefminister''s cabinet colleagues were among those who spoke atthe function.
