Sitapur/Lakhimpur (UP), Feb 5 (PTI) CBI today carriedout simultaneous searches at different places in two districtsin connection with the multi-crore alleged foodgrain scam.
Searches were carried out at residences and businesspremises of a BSP leader and a food contractors in Sitapur andLakhimpur district, official sources said.
In Sitapur, the central agency searched six differentplaces including the house and office of a BSP leader inMaholi.
Sleuths also carried out searches at two places inBisvan and one at Sarsaian village under Reosa police stationfrom where the BSP leader hails.
Officials are reported to have collected all thenecessary documents and papers from the respective places.
According to them, substantial evidences have been gathered.
No one was arrested as scrutiny of papers was goingon, they added.
In Lakhimpur, CBI searched Naurangabad and HidayatNagar residence of the food contractor and also interrogatedhim for nearly six hours.
More than 60 FIRs were lodged at different policestation against 500 people in the district after the allegedscam surfaced in 2004.
Last year, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad HighCourt while hearing a petition had directed CBI for acomprehensive probe in the foodgrain scam as it spannedseveral districts of the state.
The scam involved sale of foodgrains meant for the PDSand other special schemes for those under BPL, SampoornaGramin Rozgar Yojana (now integrated with NREGS), AntyodayaYojana and mid-day meal scheme, being sold off to privateentities in country and abroad.
Entries were made in the government stocks that thestocks had been distributed among the target populace, whilethe foodgrains were being allegedly siphoned off elsewhere.
