CWG official wants OC members to be honoured

New Delhi, Feb 6 (PTI) Commonwealth Games Media Committeechairman Tarlochan Singh has demanded Prime Minister ManmohanSingh to honour Organising Committee members in recognition ofhosting the CWG last October.

In a letter to the PM, Tarlochan, a former Member ofParliament, said special national awards should be institutedfor the organisers of the Games in the line of similar honourconferred after the 1982 Asiad here.

"It is a request that you may consider to instituteCommonwealth Award following the lead given by Smt IndiraGandhi. Government should highlight the glorious part of theGames," he wrote in the letter.

"I may further add that some members of the OrganisingCommittee and the President of the Indian Olympic Associationwere given Padma Bhushan/Padma Shree awards," he said.

Tarlochan, former chairman of National Commission forMinorities, said that the Delhi Commonwealth Games had earnedpraise from all participating nations and the organisersdeserved to be conferred awards.

"The Commonwealth Games 2010 were not only the first everin our country but these were conducted in such a manner thatall the participating nations had praised India for suchmagnificent arrangements. India won the largest number ofmedals since the inception of these Games and even beatenEngland in medal tally.

"Smt Gandhi instituted a special National Award soonafter the 9th Asian Games in New Delhi in November 1982. Thisaward was of two categories on the line of Padma Awards wasnamed as Asiad Vashisht Jyoti Award and Asiad Jyoti Award. TheAwards were given to selected persons who were part of theOrganising Committee at a glittering ceremony at theRashtrapati Bhawan by the President of India," he said in theletter.
