Guwahati, Feb 4 (PTI) Opposition Asom Gana Parishad(AGP) today suffered a jolt after firebrand leader and formerMP Sarbananda Sonowal announced his decision to join the BJP.
Confirming recent media reports in this regard,Sonowal said he will quit the AGP and formally join the BJP ata public rally to be held in his home constituency Dibrugarhon February 8.
Stating that he will elaborate the reasons for hisdecision to quit the regional party "very soon", Sonowala former general secretary of the influential All AssamStudents Union (AASU) said.
Sonowal who lost the last Lok Sabha election fromDibrugarh said he will join the BJP at the rally to be held inpresence of party president Nitin Gadkari.
The former student leader shot into popularity for hispetition in Supreme Court on the controversial IllegalMigrants (determination by tribunal) Act (IMDT) which led toits scrapping.
AGP leaders were not immediately available for theircomments.
