New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) The Municipal Corporation ofDelhi has decided to keep the offices of the property taxdepartment open on Saturdays during February and March thisyear.
However, the offices will remain closed on secondSaturdays.
Yogendra Chandolia, chairman of MCD StandingCommittee, said the move will help tax-payers could file theirself-assessment returns and deposit property tax without anyhassles. The offices will provide assistance and receivereturns and tax from 10 am to 5.30 pm.
Chandolia also appealed to the taxpayers to avail ofthe ongoing amnesty schemes which will provide waiver ofinterest and penalty, subject to up-to-date payment ofproperty tax.
The MCD is running two schemes to settle cases underthe present system of assessment -- unit area method -- aswell as the old rateable value method (RV).
The Chairman of the Standing Committee noted thatthese schemes would be valid only till February 28.
The RV system of assessment continued till March 31,2004 as the new system under unit area method was introducedfrom April 1 that year. In the RV system, the capital valueof the property was used to be taken into account while in theunit area method, value is assigned to colonies rather thanindividual properties.
The cash-strapped MCD is keen to collect more propertytax, which is its main source of revenue. The collection hasbeen below the initial target this financial year, promptingthe civic body to revise the target.
