HC directive to TNPCB

Chennai, Feb 4 (PTI) Madras High Court today directed theTamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to inspect a dyeingunit in Tiruppur which sought to exempt it from the orderdirecting closure of all dyeing and bleaching units andfile a status report before Feb 8.

The court had on Feb 28 ordered closure of over 700 dyeingand bleaching units in the hosiery town of Tiruppur for notachieving zero discharge level of effluents into Noyyal River.

The order was passed on a contempt petition.

Stating that it had complied with each and every directiveof high court and achieved ZLD, Classic Knitwear Processorsfiled the review application seeking permission to function.

When the matter came up before a bench comprising ChiefJustice M.Y.Eqbal and Justice T.S.Sivagnanam, counsel for thecompany A.L.Sundaresan, submitted even though the unit hadachieved ZLD still the authority had threatened to close downthe unit.

Moreover, the petitioner was not a party to the contemptproceedings since it has already complied each andevery direction of the court.

The bench directed TNPCB to depute a team of boardofficials to inspect the unit alongwith members of monitoringcommittee and file a detailed status report by Febraury 8 andposted the matter for hearing to that date.
