Maken announces coaching centre in Imphal

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) Sports Minister Ajay Maken todayannounced setting up of a coaching centre in Imphal, whilesanctioning a football academy to Dimapur in Nagaland during aworkshop on ''Youth and Sports development in North-Easternregion'' here.

Addressing the issue of lack of quality coaches invarious sporting disciplines in the North-East, Maken said theImphal coaching institute would be catering to the needs ofthe North-Eastern states.

Emphasising that Imphal would be the fourth coachinginstitute in the country after Patiala, Kolkata and Bangalore,the new sports minister said, "Looking at the problems ofscarcity of coaches in the North-Eastern region, we havedecided to set up a coaching centre in Imphal, which willparticularly cater to the requirements of this region."

Maken also decided to sanction a football academy toNagaland in view of the poor infrastructure for sports in theNorth-Eastern states.

Assuring that the other states of the region would alsobe alloted academies over the course of time, he said, "thisis just the beginning."

The workshop saw ministers from all the north-easternstates -- Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim,Manipur, Mizoran, Tripura and Nagaland -- sharing theirconcerns and discussing problems to the growth of sports inthe region.

Lack of infrastructure and quality coaches, thegeographical limitations of the states, lack of co-ordinationbetween the SAI (Sports Authority of India) and the StateSports bodies, lack of modern equipment etc, were some issueshighlighted by these officials. .
