Late Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan
New Delhi, Feb 4: The cold response from the system governing us led to this person taking the extreme step. Thursday evening saw Late Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan's uncle set himself ablaze. Sandeep was the brave commando that fought terrorists during the 26/11 attacks and died a martyrs death while trying to save people in the Taj Hotel, Mumbai.

K Mohanan (Sandeep's uncle), immolated himself in what looked as an act of frustration and loath to the system.

According to police, Mohanan arrived at Vijay Chowk at around 5.45 pm with a can of kerosene and set himself on fire. He was taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and shifted to Safdarjung later. He has been admitted with 98 per cent burns and is in critical condition.

Mohanan, is the younger brother of Sandeep's father and is a grocery shop owner in Kozhikode, Kerala.

Unnikrishnan, Sandeep's father was distraught on hearing the news and commented, "I don"t know why he has done this. I am not in an emotional state to talk about it. Many people who are related to Sandeep are prepared for sacrifices and are concerned about many things. My brother is a very intelligent man."

The Addl DCP (New Delhi) V A Gupta after initial investigation said, "K Mohanan came to Delhi two days ago from Kozhikode (Kerala). He attempted suicide because he wanted to feel the pain that his nephew must have felt." Another police officer was also quoted as saying, "K Mohanan informed a few mediapersons, who parked their OB vans outside Parliament House, before taking the extreme step. Some of them recorded the incident on their cameras without anyone trying to save his life."

A diary was recovered from Mohanan's belongings which revealed why Mohanan resorted to this extreme step. The diary read, “the administrators and representatives of the political parties could not do anything for the victims of the 26/11 attack. It was actually a war against two nations. Wasn"t the decision that was taken by the government on the Kandahar incident a reason for the Mumbai attack?... Anyone can come to India and do anything in India... Indian democracy is a curse for India itself... the enemies are utilizing this... why is the government delaying the introduction of a bill in Parliament against terrorism?.... Democracy should be for the well-being of the nation, and it should not make way for terrorism... Sandu mon (Sandeep Unnikrishnan) you are forgotten every passing day... but I will never forget you."
