Describing Thomas as an honest man, it said he had noreason to resign under a cloud because of a media trial orbecause of he has become "the collateral victim of a politicaltug of war."

"...he remains an honest man who has done no wrong andwho is in fact the victim of circumstances, of politicalone-upmanship, of deeply flawed and motivated investigativeprocesses, of badly delayed judicial processes and of a mediatrial that has bismirched his reputation before the eyes of anunsuspecting public," the Association said in a statementhere.

The Association said it was "actively" exploring thepossibility of impleading itelf in the ongoing Supreme Courtcase in order to ensure that "this miscarriage of justice andthe continuing victimisation of Thomas is not furtherprolonged".

Referring to the palmolein import case in which he islisted as an accused for being the Food secretary in the statein 1990s, the association said he had been the target of a"cynical and merciless campaign of libel, of unsubstatiatedallegations, ignorant criticism and innuendo on the basis of achargesheet that is pending in his name for the last 20 years.

The facts of the case have been deliberately obscuredand his impeccable service record of over 30 years had beenignored, the statement said.
