Ensuring peaceful industrialisation major challenge, says DGP

Cuttack, Feb 2 (PTI) Ensuring a peacefulindustrialisation in the state was a major challenge for theOrissa police besides tackling left wing extremism (LEW).

�Law and order problems arising out of rapidindustrialization like during land acquisition anddisplacements is a major issue for the police. We will comeout with concrete proposals as to how to tackle these issuespeacefully without the use of brute force�, said the DGPManmohan Praharaj after inaugurating the two-day 55th annualIPS officers conference here.

Praharaj said this in the wake of industrial unrestbeing reported from different parts of the state. While 14tribals were killed in police firing at Kalinga Nagar steelhub in 2006, the security personnel had a tough time to tackleindustry related violence in Posco''s proposed steel plant areanear Paradip.

"The security personnel need to tackle such incidentswithout use of brute force," he said adding that police wasalso facing new crimes like economic offences and theft ofnatural resources like minerals.

������ A total of 107 IPS officers of the state, including thesuperintendents of police of different districts are attendingthe conference which would conclude on Thursday with ChiefMinister Naveen Patnaik, who also holds the Home portfolioscheduled to address the valedictory session.

The IPS meet is aimed at discussing to build a�motivated� police force in the state and establish a strongcoordination between the officers.

Several aspects of the force including expansion ofits strength, improving training facilities for its personnel,seeking adequate budgetary provisions for police modernisationand motivating the force to face the naxal menace as well asproblems created by industrialization in the state are beingdeliberated in the conference.
