Puducherry, Feb 2 (PTI) Puducherry Chief Minister VVaithilingam today presented a tax free interim budget in theterritorial assembly seeking allocation of Rs 2,241 crore forthe first six months of the fiscal 2011-2012.
Presenting the budget, Vaithilingam, who is also holdingfinance portfolio, said as the term of present assembly wouldbe ending in May, the annual plan outlay for the fiscal2011-2012 could not be finalised.
Vaithilingam said the revenue generation from sales tax hadincreased from Rs 365 crore in 2006-2007 to Rs 645 crore in2010-2011.
"We have shown a growth rate of eight per cent of revenuegeneration from sales tax in 2008-2009, 19 per cent in2009-2010 and 29 per cent in the 2010-2011", he said.
He said said the excise collection, which was Rs 143.49crore during 2006-2007, had increased to Rs 370 crore in2010-2011.
Opposition AIADMK, CPI and MDMK alleged that the governmenthad failed in curbing prices of essential commodities and madevociferous protest against the government.
Displaying placards the members rushed towards thespeaker R Radhakrishnan. When his plea to the agitators toresume seats did not evince response the Speaker ordered thewatch and ward staff to evict them.
Later the House adjourned for tomorrow.
In his customary address, Lt Governor Dr Iqbal Singh saidthe Centre had sanctioned Rs 66 crore for implementation ofpolice modernisation scheme in the Union Territory in thecurrent five year plan (2007-2012).
As many as 140 self help groups were formed during thecurrent year as part of the efforts of the government toencourage women.
A motion of thanks moved by Parliamentary Secretary toChief Minister was adopted in the House.
