Special cancer awareness walks in Delhi on Sunday

New Delhi, Feb 2 (PTI) To express solidarity withcancer-affected people and survivors and raise awareness aboutthe disease, two special walks are being held in the nationalcapital on Sunday.

The events are being organised by NGOs CanSupport andIndian Cancer Society separately.

The ''Walk for Life - Stride against Cancer'' will be heldby CanSupport and will start from the Central Civil ServicesSports Ground in Chanakyapuri.

Gursharan Kaur, wife of the Prime Minister, is expectedto flag off the 4-km walk and run at 8.30 AM and Delhi ChiefMinister Sheila Dikshit is likely to be among the dignitariespresent along with social activists and volunteers.

The event is being held just two days after February 4,which is observed every year as World Cancer Day.

"The purpose of the walk is to alert everyone to therising incidence of cancer, to show solidarity with thoseaffected by cancer, and to raise funds for our free palliativeand supportive care services for people battling cancer," aCanSupport official said.

There will also be a special ''Lap of Honour'' to be led bycancer survivors.

On the same day, the Indian Cancer Society is organisinga ''Walk for Cancer Awareness'' through Sarojini Nagar area from9 AM to 12 noon.

"Our walk this year coincides with a major conference onpaediatric cancer organised by the Rajiv Gandhi CancerInstitute. So we have chosen childhood cancer as our focusthis year," a representative of Indian Cancer Society said.

"We expect about 2000 plus participants, including schooland college students, NCC cadets, who will join patients,survivors, caregivers and well-wishers in spreading the word''cancer is curable when detected early," she said.
