No scam in mid-day meal scheme in MCD schools, says BJP

New Delhi, Feb 2 (PTI) The ruling BJP in MCD todayrebutted the opposition charge of a "scam" in the mid-day mealscheme in civic body''s primary schools, saying there is nodiscrepancy in two official figures cited on the issue.

In reply to a question by a councillor at an MCD StandingCommittee meet, the education department had said the civicbody is preparing mid-day meal for 9.94 lakh students daily.

However, in his budget speech, MCD Education Committeechairman Mahender Nagpal said the total number of students inmunicipal schools is 9.75 lakh.

Citing the difference in the two figures, the oppositionCongress had claimed that the MCD is preparing meal for extra19,000 students which is causing a loss of Rs two lakh a day.

Clarifying on this, Nagpal said the figure cited by himdid not include the number of students in schools aided byMCD. "There are 44 aided schools and we give mid-day meal to13,000 children in these institutions," he said.

"The remaining 6,000 is due to extra three-four mealsbeing prepared in our 1746 schools every day. There should beprovision for some extra food for children," he said.

Nagpal said there is no "scam" in this matter and theopposition charges are "baseless".

Municipal Commissioner K S Mehra, however, had yesterdaysaid that the issue is of serious concern and would be lookedinto. "We would ask for a detailed information from theofficers of education department," he had said.

Nagpal also dismissed reports of less enrolment in MCDschools due to lack of facilities. He said there was some dropin numbers as the labourers who came to Delhi for CommonwealthGames have now gone back to their native places.
