Mumbai, Feb 1 (PTI) A senior faculty member of theIndian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) has been askedto retire compulsorily by its Board of Governors after twostudents filed complaints alleging their sexual harassmentby him.
The Board also passed an order to reduce Professor S KGupta''s pension and gratuity by a third, IIT spokesperson JayaJoshi said in a statement here today.
"It was on March 12, 2010, that the Board had passedan order to impose the penalty of compulsory retirement withreduction in pension and gratuity by one-third," Joshi said.
The Institute received a formal complaint in 2009about Gupta, who headed the Centre for Environmental Scienceand Engineering, after the victims had raised the matter withthe student counsellor, she said.
After verifying facts, a suspension order was issuedagainst Gupta and an inquiry started in March 2009. The probeconcluded in August 2009 and a report was submitted to theDirector of IIT-B, the statement said.
IIT-B has zero tolerance against any kind of sexualharassment. The Institute has a well-defined, process-orientedapproach to discourage such incidents. On the rare occasionthat they do occur, it deals with them expeditiously and in anexemplary fashion to ensure they are not repeated, it added.
