FS to visit US next week, issue of duped Indians to come up

New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI) India is expected to take up withthe US authorities the issue of Indian students dupedand tagged in California when Foreign Secretary Nirupama Raotravels to Washington next week for an official visit.

Rao will be in Washington on February 11 and 12primarily for pre-scheduled Foreign Office Consultations withher counterpart William Burns, sources said.

She will also meet other senior officials of the USAdministration during her stay there, covering a wide range ofbilateral relations.

In some of these meetings, the issue of Indian studentswho have been duped and subsequently tagged is also expectedto come up, the sources said.

Rao is expected to ask the US authorities howthe "dubious" Tri-Valley University was allowed to dupestudents and impress upon remedial action.

Earlier in the day today, External Affairs Minister S MKrishna said "we will be taking it up with the educationalauthorities in the US as to how it allowed the university tofunction, how it was allowed to dupe gullible Indianstudents."

Approximately 100 students had obtained visas from theUS mission in India and a number of students in the US, asdependents of their spouses, had enrolled in the now-shut TriValley University after taking the required authorization.

The US authorities have now put radio tags on them totrack their movements for investigations.
