Puducherry, Jan 31 (PTI): Chief Minister V Vaithilingamwill present the interim budget of the Union Territory for thefiscal 2011-2012 on the floor of the House on February 2.
A press release from Secretary to the Assembly MSivaprakasam today said the budget would be presented that dayafter the address by the Lt Governor.
The vote on account to be tabled for adoption wouldearmark funds for the first few months for the government inthe fiscal.
This is the first Assembly session after former ChiefMinister N Rangasamy and P Angalane quit the posts of MLAsfrom the House on January 20, bringing down the strength ofthe ruling Congress from 13 to 11. Their resignations hadsince been accepted by the Speaker R Radhakrishnan.
The Vaithilingam led Congress government enjoys support ofseven DMK members and also of three Independents from outsidein the 30 member Assembly. On the opposition block the AIADMKhas three members followed by PMK (two), CPI and MDMK (oneeach). There are three nominated members with Congress, CPIand PMK having one each.
Puducherry is headed for Assembly polls in the next fewmonths as the five year term of the ministry ends by May.
There have been crucial developments in the opposition,with AIADMK seeking to associate like-minded parties in itsfold to form a front here to take on Congress in the polls.
With strong indications that Rangasamy would float a newparty (by converting the N R Peravai formed by his followersand dissident sections of Congress), a front under theleadership of AIADMK and comprising Left parties and otherexisting fraternal parties is likely to be formed here.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Planning VNarayanasamy said in a release today that the Congress-DMKalliance was strong and this front would form the nextgovernment after the polls. He also said Rangasamy had taken astep in the wrong direction by quitting the ruling Congressand also membership of the Assembly.
