Mumbai, Jan 30 (PTI) Geethu Anna Jose lived upto thebilling as the country''s best woman basketball player as shepowered her team Southern Railway to an emphatic 76-66 winover defending champions Chattisgarh in the final of theUnited Phosphorous-Savio Cup All-India Basketball tournamenthere today.
Jose''s 29 points made the difference in the finalanalysis, helping her team pull clear whenever Chattisgarh,driven by Pushpa M and captain Anju Lakra, loomed close.
The short-stature Pushpa was on target with her shooting,finishing with 27 points, while Anju chipped in with 20. WithSeema Singh not her usual hustling self, Chattisgarh fellshort in the defence and fast breaks, which also proved theirundoing.Not getting off to the best of starts, Southern Railwayfinished the first quarter, five points adrift, but they sunk25 points in the second, to take a 40-35 lead at half-time,which they never relinquished.
Chattisgarh reduced the lead to three points in the finalquarter at 61-64 but they just could not hold back therampaging Geethu Anna Jose, who was impressive with her driveins and shots from the pivot.
Also keeping the scoreboard moving for the winners were PAnitha and Renjini Peter with 16 points each.
The winners took home Rs 50,000, while the runners-upside had to be content with Rs 25,000.
