''Police Call Centre'', launched

Kozhikode, Jan 30 (PTI): With a view to further improvingthe efficiency of policing in Kozhikode city, a ''Police CallCentre'', claimed to be the first such in the country, has beenlaunched.

This facility, launched here on an experimental basis fromAugust 15 last year, is expected to make filing petitions easyand hassle-free, P Vijayan, Kozhikode City PoliceCommissioner, said.

The toll-free number to the Centre will be 8129000000 andwould enable petitioners get an appointment withSub-Inspectors, Circle Inspectors, Assistant Commissioner andCommissioner.

People could dial the toll free number which will beavailable 24x7, he said.

The number could also be used to file complaints, checkcomplaint status, inform about traffic blocks and avail otherimportant information related to police and security issues.

This would reduce the physical as well as financialdifficulties experienced by people who come to the policestation for registering complaints, he said.

Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecommunicationscompany, is co-sponsoring the project along with the Policedepartment,he said.

On the rise in number of juvenile cases, the Commissionersaid parents had the responsibility to check the activities ofchildren. Some 60 children were arrested for theft and chainsnatching cases in city and surrounding areas last year,Vijayan said.

Electronic surveillance in the city will be strengthened byinstalling 16 more cameras in addition to the existing four,he said.

The recently launched ''Student Police Cadets'' force inschools, has attracted national attention,he claimed, adding,the main objective was to inculcate in the students socialresponsibility and discipline.
