Washington, Jan 30 (ANI): Americans have given high ratings to President Barack Obama's state of the union address, with a latest poll saying that 65 percent had a positive reaction to the speech.

The plan by congressional Republicans for more drastic savings, cutting federal spending to 2008 levels, gets a bit higher backing.

ABC News quoted a USA Today/Gallup Poll as saying that the speech gathered only 28 percent of negative reaction among the US citizens.

"He accomplished about as much as you can in a State of the Union, considering the differences in the country," Robert Lehrman, an American University professor and former speechwriter for Vice President Al Gore, said.

Forty-one percent prefer the Republicans' plan to cut spending to 2008 levels, before Obama took office.

Although this blurred the sharp partisan line that typically runs down the center aisle of the House chamber, Americans are sceptical that it will have much impact.

Fifty percent-44 percent respondents say the bipartisan seating at the speech is not a sign that the two parties will be more willing to work with each other this year. (ANI)
