Jammu, Jan 27 (PTI) Chief Income Tax Commissioner G RSofi was today appointed as the first Chief InformationCommissioner of Jammu and Kashmir, six years after the stateenacted the landmark RTI.
The name of Sofi, 59, was decided after a meeting ofChief Minister Omar Abdullah, leader of Opposition MehboobaMufti and Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand. However, the postsof the two Information Commissioners will remain vacant forthe time being.
Sofi, at present working as Chief Income Commissioner(Amritsar Division), will be in the post till he attains theage of 65 years or any order thereof.
The meeting to appoint the state CIC was postponedtwice earlier because Mehbooba had boycotted them but thistime she had agreed to join the meeting.
Jammu and Kashmir was the first state to enact theRight to Information (RTI) Act in 2004.
During the meeting, the name of former DirectorGeneral of Police Ashok Bhan was also considered but he couldnot make it to the coveted post.
The Committee will meet again before the start ofAssembly session to finalise the names of two StateInformation Commissioners.
Omar Abdullah government had last year decided onappointing former chief information commissioner (CIC) ofIndia Wajahat Habibullah to the post. He was, however, notrelieved by the Centre.
A Bachelor of Arts from Kashmir University, he joinedthe Indian Revenue Service (IRS) in 1977.
He has worked in different capacities in Income TaxDepartment in J&K, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Punjab.
He did his MBA from Hull University, UK, in 1997-98and remained associated with RTI in different capacities. PTIAB SKL
