Patna, Jan 27 (PTI) The Bihar government today clearedthe decks for setting up a five-member commission to suggestways and means to alleviate the condition of economically andeducationally poor people among the upper castes.
The decision in this regard was taken at a cabinetmeeting presiding over by the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, thePrincipal Secretary (cabinet and coordination department)Afzal Amanullah told reporters at a briefing.
The Commission, comprising a chairman, a vice-chairmanand three members, has been given a reference to identify thenumber of the poors among the upper castes on economic andeducational considerations and suggest ways and means fortheir uplift, he said.
It has also been given a mandate to look into the reasonsof the backwardness of the poor among the upper castes, hesaid.
The commission will have a tenure of three years sincethe date of its constitution, Amanullah said.
The process for selection of the chairman,vice-chairman and the members will be undertaken soon by thepersonnel department, the Principal Secretary (cabinet andcoordination department) said.
It may be mentioned that the ruling NDA had promisedto set up the commission for the poors among the upper castesfor remedial actions to alleviate their economic andeducational condition.
