Gadchiroli (Mah), Jan 27 (PTI) Congress General SecretaryRahul Gandhi today indicated major changes in theorganisational set up of the Youth Congress and party''sfrontal students'' wing NSUI saying office-bearers would henceforth be elected directly by members of these organisations.
Addressing a ''Adiwasi Melawa'' (tribal youth meet) in thisnaxal-infested district in Eastern Vidarbha, Gandhi said theprevious practice of nominating leaders (presidents) of thesetwo organisations will be done away with, and now onwards, themembers will elect their own leader.
"I will not select your leader...But you will have toelect your own leader and we are not bothered about his familybackground but surely, will depend on his personality andcapabilities," Gandhi told the tribal youths amidst tightsecurity arrangements at the meet held in a specially erectedshamiyana here.
Gandhi felt that tribals today are not visible on thenational platform and are confined to mostly district-levelpositions and a handful at the state-level, and hence changesare required in the set up.
"I want to bring changes in the lives of tribals in thecountry and want to see them play a bigger role on thenational level in these two organisations," he said.
Virtually launching a membership drive of the YouthCongress in Maharashtra from this backward region, Gandhicalled on youngsters to enroll themselves in large numbers inthe the National Students'' Union of India (NSUI) and YouthCongress to strengthen them.
He also interacted with a couple of youth activists, andanswered their queries. He directed them to forward theirgrievances and problems if any, to State Chief ministers.
