Panaji, Jan 25 (PTI) Claiming that her fiance was beatenby locals in the beach village of Calangute as he was African,a Goan woman today alleged that even policemen helped the mobin the attack.
Susan Vaz, who runs a restaurant at Calangute, toldmediapersons that her fiance, Luck Oneya Cholem, was badlyassaulted over a petty issue.
"He was assaulted for being an African," she allegedadding that even policemen who were called for help assaultedhim in public on January 22.
Local police, however, refuted her charge saying it wasnot a racist attack.
Vaz said that even her restaurant, famous for Africancousin, was damaged by the mob.
She said that the incident took place after anautorickshaw banged against the car driven by her fiance nextto their restaurant.
"The autorickshaw driver called his friends who startedassaulting Luck," Vaz claimed.
She said that Calangute police who came on the scene didnot do anything to stop the mob from rampaging her restaurant.
"In fact, they wanted to arrest my fiance who was badlybeaten up by them," she added.
A Police complaint has been filed with the Calangutepolice in this regard.
Vaz said that she has given CCTV footage of the incidentwhich shows policemen assaulting Luck and the mob peltingstones on the restaurant.
When contacted police spokesman Atmaram Deshpande ruledout that it was a racist attack.
"What we have gathered is that there was an accidentbetween two vehicles which resulted in the trouble," he saidadding that even the African national called his friends whichcomplicated the situation.
